Planet: Wayland

Many generations ago, human colonists settled on the beautiful green and blue world of Wayland but only to be faced with strong resistance from the local species, Psadans and Myneyrshis. A simple clerical error resulted in Wayland disappearing from the Old Republic’s databanks, rendering the human settlers to fend for themselves without reinforcements until the Empire arrived in its early days. The conflict between the two parties was then suppressed by the presence of the Empire. Rumor has it that the Empire took interest in this world because of its remote location for a secret storehouse, though the secret storehouse’s existence has not yet been confirmed by any sources inside or outside of the Empire. Today, Wayland enjoys the public presence of Mandalorian government but is still considered a backwater planet by most.

A small land-owning population is considerably wealthy from the exporting of Wayland marble, an exquisite form of marble found on Wayland only. The Wayland marble is used throughout the wealthy households across the galaxy as flooring tiles or materials for wall sculptures, with the marble itself demanding a respectable price as this particular type of marble contains top rate flecks and etchings. Wayland marble is rare because it is a former limestone that has been forged under intense pressure that changed its crystalline structure. Its unique carbon compositions give the marble spectacular fleck patterns, providing the marble a wonderful shine when polished with proper equipment.

Thornbushes and acid vines covered significant areas of land, once giving the planet a lush green appearance when viewed from above. Garrals, a predator preying on other local animal life such as clawbirds, vine snakes, and various six-legged nestling creatures, were used often by the Empire as watchdogs. The local population has forgotten whether vicious garrals were local to the planet or humans brought them here, though garrals are definitely a species that is now unique to Wayland only.

Wayland, though appearing somewhat peaceful with the small presence of Mandalorian government, is actually undergoing a tough cold war between the humans and the native species Psadans and Myneyrshis. Despite it had been about a hundred years since the last full-blown battle as the Empire had done a good job suppressing the violence, hate groups among each of the two sides are still purposely segregated in everything from living in separate cities to having a species-based senate under the Mandalore government. Though potentially volatile, there has been no bloodshed for an extended period of time. If the Mandalorians ever withdraw their presence from this planet, however, the political situation may crumble into war once again.

The environment of Wayland has recently become a concern by its local citizens as the usage of fossil fuel in the past years has had an impact on the ecology. The locals, both humans and the native species, have cooperated in establishing an import tax on coal and other detrimental fuel sources that may cause environmental damage to Wayland, but the tax program has yet to be proven effective, as people tend to be willing to pay the additional price to keep their ecumenopolis running and homes heated. Other sources of energy must be made popular and cost-effective before the usage of fossil fuels can be a thing of the past for the people of Wayland.
