Planet: Vasuuli
Table of Contents [hide]

The lone planet in the System of the same name, Vasuuli is a relatively small, uninviting world with long winters, short summers, and a toxic atmosphere that makes living there difficult. The planet used to be larger but was struck eons ago by a large meteoroid. The impact was so intense that a portion of the planet was dislodged. These large pieces of interplanetary matter were jettisoned into space, surrounding the planet in what would become a small asteroid belt. The meteoroid left a large scar across the southern pole, exposing the planets mantle and permanently destroyed the lowlands that once existed there. The impact also changed the natural make up of the planet's atmosphere, making it more sulfuric and dangerous for most aerobic creatures to breathe. Vasuuli is cold, located just outside the ‘“temperate zone” from the system's single star. The temperature usually hovers just around freezing which keeps the large glacier fields intact. The planet's landscape is dominated by a large mountain range that stretches its way around most of the planet. Dubbed Mount Vasuuvia by the locals, the mountain is rich in materials which lead early explorers to brave the cold and try to colonize the planet. A large molten Ocean, known as Lake Aelburn, is located along the southern pole of the planet.

Vasuuli was originally settled by a group of human explorers in search of exploiting the rare minerals sure to be found in the large mountain ranges. The group initially made camp to the north of Mount Vasuuvia, establishing the planet's first colony over a Hibridium Deposit. The settlers found most of the frozen landscape simply unable to support significant life. With the ice-covered ground and cold temperatures, farming was almost impossible. Even with significantly advanced agricultural technology of the time, farming was very difficult and forced these settlers to spend quite a bit of resources to import food and energy. Rumors of riches reached nearby sectors and this led to a flood of additional souls looking to colonize. Most encountered the same hardships faced by the original settlers, but some settlers found success settling in the jungles just south of Mount Vasuuli near the banks of the molten Lake Aelburn. Using the resources from the nearby molten lake the settlers were able to heat their dwellings and, more importantly, grow some crops.

The city of Vertwynne was established years later near the southeastern edge of Mount Vasuuvia. Bordered by jungle and glacier, the city had many resources available to it that allowed it to thrive. The city saw a period of remarkable growth once a spaceport was constructed. The starport was freely open to the public, and formally introduced the colony to the galaxy as a whole and allowed the settlement to quickly grow into the planet's first major city. Over the next several decades, control of the planet switched hands many times. Mining groups covered much of the mountain range with mines and smaller colonies were established on the glaciers to the north by a small logistics corporation. Both groups pushed goods through the Starport in Vertwynne. The boost in settlements and commerce brought even more attention to the small planet and pushed the population to over 500 million sentients.
