Planet: Balamak
Table of Contents [hide]

A world of rolling hills and broad plains, Balamak is a fertile world known for being the breadbasket of the Taldot sector. Its surface, ninety-five percent of which is arable land, is covered in the rich soil that gives Balamak its agricultural potential, while the shallow northeastern sea teems with edible fish. Despite its lush grasslands, Balamak has few native land animals for which farmers have compensated for by importing domesticated animals from other systems.

Long an important agriworld in the Mid Rim, Balamak has been part of the galactic community for centuries. However, in the chaos of the Clone Wars, the populace of the planet was almost entirely wiped out and all records of Balamak’s location were lost to the galaxy. However, Balamak has recently been rediscovered; the Triumvirate Coalition, as part of Operation New Horizons, located the Balamak system while exploring the Taldot sector. The Triumvirate Navy’s Lieutenant Commander Larrek Kline, the pilot responsible for the discovery, found the war-scarred world to be suitable for recolonization and sent word of his discovery back to the Coalition. Within days, the Triumvirate Coalition established a significant presence on Balamak and, with assistance from the New Republic, began the effort of rebuilding and recolonizing the planet. With such widespread support for the recolonization effort, the project proceeded quickly with entire cities being built at a moment’s notice. Like the original colonists before them, Balamak’s new inhabitants realized the planet’s value as an agricultural center and made extensive efforts to rebuild and protect the local ecosystem. Balamak has since become vital to the local economy of Taldot sector and is also an important staging point for the Triumvirate Navy.

While herd animals such as nerfs and robas have been imported to Balamak, plant-based agriculture remains the staple of Balamak’s economy. Off-world crops such as shorn and ebla grain grow well on Balamak, but the native makla grain is the planet’s most important product. Makla produces plentiful harvests of delicious, nourishing grain, and is easy to grow in Balamak’s temperate climate. Scientists from the Triumvirate Coalition have made efforts to transplant makla samples to other worlds; however, it seems the crop requires an enzyme unique to Balamak’s soil and such efforts have thus far been unsuccessful.

The city of Dragon’s Keep, built on the former site of the planetary capital of Dorum, is both the civilian and military hub of Balamak. Home of the central management facilities necessary to govern the planet, Dragon’s Keep is also the location of the largest Triumvirate Coalition military base in Taldot sector. This makes Balamak an important staging area for Coalition military elements and their permanent garrison on the planet is charged with maintaining peace throughout the Taldot sector.
