Too small to generate the heat necessary to form a temperate world, Derra II collected a Type I atmosphere and then froze. Temperatures during the night cycle can dip to levels that will injure non-arctic species. Once a year, Derra IV passes close to this world, and the tidal boost helps to keep the planet's core churning. This has driven the seismic activity that created the Highbridges, one of the most visually stunning mountain ranges in the system. Pyroclastic pools, fed by a system of deep magma vents, simmer over a tectonic rift where the stony peaks meet the frigid badlands. The sweeping expanse of the ice sheets dominates most of the surface of Derra II, and the edge of the rocky plateau is where its colony was established.

While it never achieved the sheer popularity of Derra I, the success of the resorts there attracted the interest of tourists who had a different concept of paradise. Chiss, Talz, and Whiphids started booking holidays on Derra II and essentially invented the local resort industry. Unlike other worlds, Derra II's climate is fairly constant year-round, and there has never been a touring season. While vacation traffic was always light, it was constant until the outbreak of the Derra Virus. Now the resorts are empty, the famous hedge maze is unkempt, and visiting spacers are generally shunned.
