Planet: Serpine
Table of Contents [hide]

Serpine is a world with a cold but breathable climate located in the Illisurevimurasi sector of the Outer Rim. As the planet's orbit around its star is more elliptical than most other celestial objects in the galaxy, it has the unique characteristic of having half the globe covered by a perpetual sheet of ice and snow, while the other half consists of a forested expanse of primary conifer-like trees and other hardy flora able to withstand the wintry climate. These dense woodlands are the domain of a sub-species of gundark native to the planet that evolved a thick fur coat and hardy skin to better withstand the planet's low temperatures. To diversify the ecosystem of the frozen half of the globe, the planetary authorities imported herds of tauntauns and packs of wampas long ago, which have since taken to the cold environment and settled within Serpine's frigid wastes permanently. Wampa hunting has since become a popular pastime for tourists and visitors who spend their free time or vacation time on the icy world.

Initially settled by the Mirialans from nearby Mirial, Serpine gradually became inhabited by Humans and other sentient species over the millennia and eventually developed itself as an independent world with a planetary economy revolving around the gambling industry. Its exquisite and extravagant gambling palaces rival the flashy and cavernous casinos of Nar Shaddaa, attracting millions of tourists and visitors each year seeking to spend their hard-earned credits in the hopes of winning big. The flow of wealth that passes through these gambling palaces is carefully overseen by the planetary government, which is led by the Emperor-Governor, who always ensures that the odds are ultimately in their favour.

During the Clone Wars, Serpine remained neutral in the conflict that enveloped the galaxy and welcomed clientele from both the Republic and the Separatist Alliance. As the authorities had heavily invested in a competent and well-trained planetary security force, the reigning Emperor-Governor was able to keep the peace within his gambling palaces despite frequent high tensions between visitors from both sides of the conflict. After the war, Serpine was able to continue to prosper by aligning itself with larger economic powers that rose within that part of the galaxy. In recent decades, the planet joined the modern-day Confederacy of Independent Systems out of economic considerations, after which the Trade Federation took over. Ever since, planetary development and urbanisation have increased exponentially to house a new influx of both tourists and the families of Federation employees.
