Lasan is a dry and dusty world, dominated by wide open plains of hardy grasses, stunted trees and a multitude of cacti species, as well as world-spanning deserts of wind-blown sand with dunes stretching hundreds of metres into the cloudless sky. South of the equator, the planet’s crust is riven and broken, as if an angry deity had attempted to peel the planet open, creating a landscape full of fissures and caves kilometres deep, which give way to waterless highlands the further south one might travel. There is little surface water for most of the year, and the native Lasat survived through their expertise in finding water-storing underground tubers and harvesting the plentiful species of cacti for both food and water. Although modern moisture vaporators have made life somewhat easier in recent times, the planet’s population is still limited by the scarcity of accessible fresh water.
The planet has a solar day of nineteen standard hours, and completes an orbit around the system’s star every four hundred two local days, although the Lasat do not use this calendar to measure their age. Rather they reckon their age by the number of dust seasons they have survived. Lasan is subject to annual dust storms which last for between three and four local months and make moving out side solid shelters both difficult and dangerous. Winds up to two hundred fifty kilometres an hour whip up the fine sand and dust into blinding curtains than scour and polish rock and metal and make landing on the planet a difficult task mainly limited to the established space ports due to the presence of guide beacons. During the rest of the year, visibility is excellent due to the clear skies and sentients can see all the way to the horizon with minimal obstacles.
Due to the harshness of the environment towards development, the native wildlife still flourishes on Lasan. Vast herds of bantha and Eopie wander the deserts and plains, hunted by prides of sand panthers, with the odd sarlacc and krayt dragon providing additional hazards to the unwary traveler. Licensed big-game hunting is allowed and provides valuable income to the planet’s government, which implements strict patrolling to ensure poaching is kept at a minimum to preserve the planet’s natural allure, although visitors seldom stay long due to the unfriendly climate.
