Planet: Herios I
Table of Contents [hide]

Herios I is both the Herios system’s administrative capital and breadbasket. Before the planet was covered in the gleaming spires, towering habitation blocks and clanging factories, it was a cool, lush world, with extensive oceans, vast plains of tall grass and bubbling mudflats. With abundant rainfall and balmy temperatures, Herios II drew settlers and migrant workers from all over the sector. The system’s government, seeing this influx of credits and mouths to feed undertook rapid, systematic urbanisation of the planet, and within a century, nothing of the world’s original landscape was visible beneath a vast, productive ecumenopolis.

Understanding that feeding the teeming billions of lives in the Herios system would require intensive agriculture and industry, the system’s government established a massive system of multi-level farms that reach kilometres into the still-blue skies. The planet’s surface was extensively stripped to provide the substrate for these vast farms, and in most places, the soil was stripped to the bedrock. Huge fields of wheat, barley, millet and other grains are grown in these towering farms, and great herds of nerf, kaadu and other herbivore are kept in close confines to provide meat, milk, hides and other by-products to feed, clothe and employ billions of sentients. An extensive network of hauliers, warehouse operators and shipping companies move the raw produce to an equally massive collection of processing plants, then transport the processed goods to their destinations, both on world and within the system. Apart from producing food, major industries on Herios I include the building of commercial space-faring vessels, farming and mining equipment as well as recreational vehicles of all sorts. Indeed, recreational speeder use is one of the major entertainment activities on the planet, with numerus speeder races taking place every weekend, drawing participants from all over the sector. One of the most well known races is the Polar relay, in which teams of four sentients and four speeders race from the northern to the southern poles. The race requires great endurance and piloting skill and no small number of teams fail to finish, with crashes and even deaths being common.
