Designed by Gallofree Yards as a medium sized freighter optimized to move through debris fields left behind after battles in space, the GS-100 sports a narrow, axe-blade shaped hull with a number of customizable storage units bolted to a lattice-work of struts and girders along both sides of the dorsal spine. The most common production setup features a number of quarter-cylinder shaped containers along both sides of the main hull, each with a retractable cargo handling arm or crane. These arms are normally controlled individually by droids, to enable the small crew to focus on avoiding collisions with large pieces of debris which could pose a significant hazard to the ship. In a pinch, the arms can all be controlled from a console on the bridge, although this is less efficient than the individual control. These maniipulator arms are used to capture floating debris and wreckage. Salvaged wreckage is then broken down into recoverable material aboard the ship and stored carefully in order to maximise the efficient use of storage space.
Life aboard these ships is austere, with little in the way of crew comforts. Long tours on these bare-bones vessels are to be avoided if possible, although typical salvage crews have little to no say on how long they will be needed aboard. Living quarters are spartan, with crews regularly having to hot-bunk, i.e. share bunks, with the crew member who is off duty utilizing the space, then swapping with the next crew member once their shift is over. Defensive armament is limited, usually, to one or two energy weapons that are used to blast smaller pieces of wreckage to prevent them from colliding with the hull, or to break them into smaller pieces to facilitate salvage. Many of these ships are in rough shape, at least externally, due to their hazardous operating environment. Despite this, ships of this type can frequently be encountered throughout the galaxy due to their ease of repair and overall durability
