The Rebel camouflage helmet's unique toroid design and open face reflect the Alliance military's broad interspecies diversity. While the helmet's durasteel ring is large enough to offer one-size-fits-all protection, the adjustable innerpiece can accommodate most species' cranial structures. The open front can accommodate a wide variety of facial protrusions or even breathing apparatuses for species that use them. While this design sacrifices some of the protection and sensory-enhanced functionality found in more enclosed helmets, the compromise is consistent with the hit-and-fade tactics a guerrilla insurgency requires.

    The innerpiece features a wrap-around leather coif extending from the temples to the back of the neck to provide basic environmental protection against weather and small insects. A fixed visor at the front protects the wearer from glare or precipitation. While designers deliberately omitted a comlink to minimize the helmet's electronic profile, built-in earpieces provide a combination of auditory enhancement and dynamic-range hearing protection. A chin strap helps keep the helmet in place in even the most vigorous encounters. As is often the case when equipment is limited, some wearers find creative uses for the helmet in non-combat situations.
