These circular, keratinous scales come from a specific area on the back of only a small number of draigon. Scientists theorise that these specialised scales which are larger than other scales on the individual dragon’s body and can be individually detached, unlike the majority of scales on the draigon’s hide, are connected to breeding. While most of the draigon’s scales are bonded to the underlying skin, certain individuals will develop a patch of pearly iridescent scales between their wings. Only fully mature draigons boast this ornamentation and then only around the breeding season. As draigon mate only infrequently, opportunities to obtain these scales are few and far between.

Due in part to their rarity and their association with mating, these scales have become valued in certain circles as tokens of love and affection. A raw scale will be sent to a jeweler, who will carefully engrave messages of devotion onto the scale and bond precious metals onto the scale, or mount the scale in a piece of jewelry such as a necklace. The market for this somewhat exotic personal ornamentation is still in its infancy, but demand is growing, and enterprising adventurers are selling harvested draigon scales for a tidy profit all over the galaxy. This may have an impact on the population of draigon throughout the known star systems, but the avian creatures are still a common sight on most worlds and are expected to remain so into the future.
