This vial contains the freeze-dried, crystalised venom of one of a number of sub-species of crystal snake. Since fresh venom decays quickly, the collected venom is promptly processed into this form to ensure long term viability and can be reconstituted using distilled water or purified oil, depending on the key components of the venom. Crystal snake venom is non-lethal in and of itself, possessing neither neurotoxic, hemotoxic or cytotoxic properties. It does however, have a strong, almost irresistible soporific effect that affects the target quickly, resulting in the loss of consciousness that may last up to an hour. During this time, the victim is completely at the mercy of the elements and whatever wildlife may wander by.
The active components of crystal snake venom, which seem to be effective on almost all sentient races no matter if they are Mammal, Reptile, Avian, Amphibian or even worm, are being actively studied by a number of top medical research facilities throughout the galaxy. Plans are underway in several systems to synthesise these compounds. The resulting medicines are expected to be of great benefit to insomniacs throughout the galaxy, although some conservative political parties preach caution against making the potential medicines easily available in case they be misused by kidnappers or bad-intentioned young males. Nevertheless, research and development of new medicines based on crystal snake venom proceeds and clinical trials on sentients is expected to take place at multiple sites throughout the galaxy.
