Featherfern (Trophy)
Table of Contents [hide]
Featherfern is something of a misnomer, as the plant with this name is not really a fern at all, as it bears clusters of small, five petal lilac and purple flowers on the end of its single vertical stalk. True ferns reproduce through spores, while the featherfern depends on pollination by a number of small bee-like insects. Originally native to the planet Bogano in the Outer Rim Territories, the featherfern has been transplanted to many other worlds due to its attractive appearance, hardy and adaptive nature and minimal need for care. The plant itself can grow to about a metre in height, with clusters of long leaves growing in sunburst patters at intervals along its stalk. The size of the leaves and the density of the clusters decrease from the base of the stalk toward the tip, which terminates in a showy cluster of mild scented stellate, or star-shaped, blossoms about two centimetres in diameter. Once pollinated these flowers dry up, and eventually the remaining husk splits open to release tiny seeds with featherlike extensions that can be blown away on the slightest breeze and actually give this plant its name.
