Planet: Chamble I
Table of Contents [hide]

Chamble I is a planet known primarily for the dual oceans of lava that cover 43% of the planet's surface. Besides the lava, the terrain is largely covered with obsidian fields; in one area, though, wind and acid rain have eroded a section of these fields, leaving a very fine, shimmering, crystal and black sanded desert.

Due to the gases seeping from Chamble I's core through the lava, the planet's atmosphere is toxic to most known lifeforms. These gases have also done well at reflecting the light from the system's star back out into space; it is for this reason that the planet's surface temperature hovers just above freezing year-round. Despite the consistent cold, weather patterns are temperamental and believed to be partly influenced by the orbit of its sister planet, Chamble II. As the grey planet looms larger in Chamble I's night sky, the planet's 'wet' season begins with more frequent torrential rains and toxic hurricanes.

Despite the hostile environment, settlers have begun several cities in the northern-most part of the planet. They face formidable odds, not the least of which are exorbitant maintenance costs amidst the earthquakes, freezing temperatures, and acid rain. Yet for many, the relative independence afforded by a loosely confederated planetary government and the potential raw material wealth within its rocky crust is well worth the risks and expense.
