A fairly contemporary design, the Modular Conveyor, or "Modcon," was developed by Allegra Enterprise Systems in response to escalating violence along the galaxy's numerous trade routes. A thick hull, powerful deflectors, improved armor coverage, and rotating laser turrets give the Modcon one of the best delivery rates in its league. Four Class-E cargo modules can be pre-loaded with freight, directly mating to payload terminals on the sides of the ship for rapid hookup and dropoff. Under attack, the destruction of a module can sometimes mean the preservation of the ship. Ventral landing ramps provide vehicular access to the central fuselage and the Modcon's generous hangar bay for manual freight transfer and passenger traffic.
While celebrated by many in the shipping industry, the Modular Conveyor suffers from a slightly reduced carrying capacity and a weak merchant sensor array. It handles like a typical heavy freighter, taking longer to thrust and possessing soft control responses, especially when heavily loaded. But most complaints are directed at the underpowered hyperdrive, a factor which has not improved the Modcon's popularity. Despite these drawbacks, carrier-based logistics outfits have made the Modular Conveyor a successful product, relying on its rugged versatility and reputation for surviving the gauntlet in conflict zones.
