The Vahaba Asteroid Belt was charted long ago, before galactic record-keeping was centralized on Coruscant by the Old Republic. For thousands of years, it served as an important junction point to the Braxant Run hyperspace lane.
Before it was discovered, the Vahaba Asteroid Belt is theorized to have contained a singular sun and similarly an individual planetary body. Evidence for this theory comes from geological surveys conducted across the system suggesting this planetary body may have been capable of sustaining life. Frozen water and fossilized basic plant life are routinely found by mining operations.
Unfortunately, the white dwarf star within the Vahaba asteroid belt came to the end of its natural lifespan before the system was charted. The collapse of the white dwarf into a neutron star tore the nearby planet apart. The resulting destruction created the Vahaba asteroid field itself as planetary debris was flung out across the system. Large, individual asteroids have been surveyed and various companies have staked mineral claims throughout the asteroid field for thousands of years. Mining these precious resources can be hazardous however as the nearby neutron star releases dangerous pulsar energy. This adds the complication of occasional shield loss, environmental systems failure and severe genetic degradation for those caught without radiation shielding.
During the Old Republic, Vahaba was used as a mining, refueling and repair hub at a convenient point along the Braxton Run Hyperlane. It was a busy place for several thousand years until additional, more accessible hyperlanes were charted and discovered, leaving Vahaba often bypassed and forgotten. The system is oddly often featured in songs and stories of ‘Angels’, mythological beings of light and unparalleled beauty. Why there are more mentions of potential angel sightings within Vahaba than elsewhere in the galaxy remains a point of some scholarly speculation, though it could simply be from the large population of pilots that would frequent the hyperspace hub during more superstitious times.
With the extensive mineral wealth once more re-discovered, Vahaba is seeing rapid redevelopment into manufacturing. Shipyards, factory stations and heavy freighters are again a common sight in the Vahaba Asteroid Belt.
